Once you've become familiar with accessing Zoom, there are a few things you should know before attending your first Zoom class.

While in your Zoom class, you will see a bar with various controls. If you are using a computer or your phone (mac or pc), these controls will be at the bottom of your screen. If you are using a tablet, the controls can be found by tapping the screen to bring them up on top or side of your screen.

Microphone

On the far left of the control bar, you will see a microphone icon, which can mute or unmute you. To use this, click or tap on the icon to turn the microphone on and off. When the microphone is off, you will see a red slash through it. Your microphone should stay muted at all times throughout the lecture, as keeping it on can pick up background noise from your device which can distract from the lecture. The host will mute everyone once the lecture starts and you should remain muted unless the professor calls for questions.

If you are having trouble hearing the lecture or being heard when you speak, clicking the small arrow to the right of the microphone icon will bring up different controls for you to change your speaker or microphone.

Camera

Next to the microphone icon, you will see a video camera icon. This icon will either say "Start Video" or "Stop Video", and controls your video. You can turn your video on or off by clicking or tapping the video, and when your video is off there will be a red slash through the icon. All participants have the option to have their video on or off. Professors love to see students' faces and it helps make an online class feel more personal, however, some users do not have cameras or wish not to be seen, which we completely understand. If you choose to have your camera on, please be conscious of your surroundings and things that your camera may pick up, as your screen will be visible to the whole class. Like the microphone icon, there is a small arrow next to it that will bring up a menu where you can choose your camera if you are having issues with it.

Chat

The chat feature is a great way to ask questions or make comments during class. Using the chat is usually the best way to bring something to the attention of HSP staff or the professor. Please note that not all professors use Zoom the same and some may not see your comments in the chat right away. All comments in the chat sent to the whole class are seen by an HSP staff member hosting the zoom meeting, so your comments are always seen by someone and will be addressed as soon as we can get to them during the lecture. The chat will default to send messages to everyone in the class. You may also choose to send a private message to another member of the class, the professor, or the HSP staff member hosting the meeting.

Raise Hand feature

Another useful tool on Zoom is the Raise Hand button. This tool is a great way to get the professors attention if you have a question. Some professors will encourage and use this feature in their class, and some will not and may prefer that you use the chat feature to ask questions, or may take questions at another time during the class session, and it differs from professor to professor. Clicking this will put a small hand icon on your video, and will bring your video icon to the front of the video toolbar, and will notify the professor that there is a raised hand and a student waiting. To raise your hand, click on the "Reactions" button on the control bar, then click "Raise Hand" from the menu that pops up.

Viewing Options

There are two options for viewing the class: Gallery View and Speaker View. You will see these options on the computer in the top right corner of the screen or on the left side of the screen if you are on a tablet or phone. Gallery view will show you every participant in the class. Speaker View will display the person speaking (your professor) on the screen with a smaller group of students along the top. Next to the gallery view button, there is a button with four arrows that will make the zoom meeting full screen.

You also have the option to "pin" your professor's video, so that no matter who speaks, you will only see your professor's video. To do this, move your mouse over to the professor's video and click on the three dots in the corner, then click "pin video". Make sure you are set to "speaker mode" so that you will view the professor in the large screen format.

The icons labeled "Invite", "Participants", and "Share Screen" will not be used for your HSP course, so you can disregard them.
